Des Moines Marina Bulkhead Repair

City of Des Moines, Des Moines, Washington

Exeltech was retained as the prime consultant to oversee civil, structural, and coastal engineering; architectural services; and environmental permitting for the preparation of construction documents, cost estimates and complete bid documents, project permits, and construction management and inspection for the North Bulkhead Repair project. The project includes removal of the failing timber bulkhead with riprap toe protection and existing timber breakwater, installation of new west and north bulkheads, and a new timber breakwater. The project also includes the demolition and rebuilding of the public restrooms located on the fishing pier.

The project promotes nearshore restoration goals by reducing the overall footprint of the marina parking lot, avoiding the use of shade-producing structures, and by replacing the existing creosote-treated timber bulkhead with steel sheet pile. The project also will eliminate the majority of riprap protection, reducing the riprap footprint from over 33,000 sq ft to just over 4000 sq ft., an 8-fold reduction in hard armoring.
