Redondo Boardwalk Emergency Repair

City of Des Moines
Des Moines, WA

Exeltech was retained by the City of Des Moines to provide project management, structural engineering design, environmental permitting, and construction management services for the repair of this storm-damaged boardwalk. The boardwalk spans one-half mile along Poverty Bay’s southern shoreline. Most of the boardwalk deck planks had come loose or broken in a winter storm, and some of the steel support systems beneath the boardwalk also failed. Repair of the storm-damaged Redondo Boardwalk included restoring structural support; replacing girders, stringers, and brackets; and replacing decking and ADA curb ramps.

One third of the project funding was provided through FHWA Emergency Relief Program. The project required a fast-track design and construction schedule and met all environmental regulatory standards. All environmental compliance and permitting tasks, including the preparation of a compensatory mitigation plan, Hydraulic Project Approval, and Section 10 Permit from the Corps of Engineers were completed on time and within budget.

Exeltech’s design, flexible within many geometry constraints, ensured the superstructure would withstand another large storm or seismic event and included aesthetic details to blend into the environmental context. The boardwalk decking was constructed of concrete, precast in wood grain form liners to depict the boardwalk as timber. The concrete decking was stained to emulate the color of cedar boards and provide a durable, UV-light resistant coating.
