Eastrail Corridor Connection

Washington State Department of Transportation
Bellevue to Renton, Washington

Exeltech provided landscape restoration and urban design services, structural engineering, and developed construction plans for a 2.48-mile section of the south Eastrail trail, historically an active rail line, as part of the I-405 Widening and Express Toll Lanes Design-Build project. Design and construction of the south section of this project is complete. Exeltech is also providing design services and construction support for the 2.43-mile north section. This project will connect a 40-mile system of express toll lanes and provide non-motorized recreation and transportation opportunities and connect Eastside communities along the Eastside Rail Corridor. Exeltech coordinated with the project engineers and biologists to design a mixed surface trail (12' asphalt trail with gravel shoulders), landscape treatments and amenities, walls, and drainage features to minimize/prevent impacts to environmentally sensitive areas within the I-405 corridor project limits:

  • Eastside Rail Corridor Trail

  • Wilburton Gap Bridge

  • Ron Regis Park buffer enhancement

  • May Creek Trail

  • Creek/stream and wetland buffer mitigation

  • Areas disturbed within City of Bellevue and City of Renton rights-of-way (roundabouts at 112th Avenue SE, NE 44th Street, and Newport Hills P&R)

Landscape design included preparing planting plans for trail edge and design and development of plans for the Wilburton Gap Bridge, a planted pedestrian bridge crossing over southbound I-405. Critical and sensitive areas restoration design included buffer enhancements, creek/stream buffer mitigation, and wetland buffer mitigation. Exeltech collaborated with the design team to develop landscape design concepts that met the stakeholders’ requirements and coordinated closely with maintenance staff and the public works staff at King County, City of Bellevue, City of Renton, and WSDOT staff at all project phases to discuss and incorporate maintenance goals and needs into the design, and ensure design guidelines compliance while providing a visually pleasing and functional design.
